Wednesday 22nd – 29th

This introduction comes to you from halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, QF 434. We are not telling you this so that you think we are part of an elite ‘Jet-Set’, in fact quite the opposite. Right now we are stuck over the shakiest of economy wings, while the members of Jet (whose album we recently put in our Fool list) sit in business class sipping martinis and being all rock n’ roll while we fork out shrapnel for a small coca-cola and try and make deadline.

So what is this poor substitute for gonzo journalism in aid of you ask? Well, the reason is simple. Geography has no impact on quality, and your location shouldn’t restrict your focus to what’s just in front of you. Despite having all the regular local content, ThreeThousand Issue 083 would also like to encourage Melburnian’s to keep abreast of what’s happening in Sydney by using TwoThousand.com.au and similarly we will be recommending ThreeThousand to Sydney-siders. Don’t get us wrong, we love the healthy (and sometime snobbish) rivalry between the two cities but we believe that it should never stop people discovering quality regardless of its location.

Most of us barely have enough money for a daily tram ticket, let alone to cultivate an art collection. But when an original work that lasts FOREVER can be bought for just $100, walking for a month starts to sound good.

Craft Victoria’s hush hush silent bidding and exhibition starts this Thursday, with work from local artists Ramona Barry, Kris Coad, Sophie Milne and Jessie Tucker on display and ripe for the bidding.

The exhibition culminates on December 2 with a live auction, and all funds raised will go to a series of grants for the partaking artists. Even if a bid seems out of your budget, pool your shrapnel and who knows, you could walk away with the goods.

With two Melbourne days over 36 degrees and summer just around the corner, you can’t blame us for being hyper on the sunglasses front of late.

These frames from Karen Walker are what every good shade should be. Big enough to hide tired eyes, classic enough to suit any outfit and strong enough to survive a hot afternoon on the Pimms.

The Walkers are also small enough to slip into a stocking, or fit neatly under a tree – ho ho hint.

How much:

$280 each

With floor to ceiling second-hand stock, Retrostar is the place every good Melbourne kid comes to test the vintage waters. It’s like rummaging around in Nanna’s wardrobe - if Nanna was a cross between Twiggy, Farrah Fawcett and Madonna with a dash of BananaRama.

If you thought the endless selection was already decent enough, then brace yourself…Retrostar just got bigger.

A whole wall has been knocked out and new room made for a wider selection of nostalgic band tees, vintage dresses, accessories and shoes galore. But beware, the place is now so big you could easily get lost and most likely emerge looking like Molly Ringwald circa 1986.

Design is both a broad term and a broad community, which means that sometimes it is nice to narrow it down a little. Many design publications exist in the ether, out there somewhere, with no location in mind. The Melbourne Design Guide 06/07 however, is more directional than a city tram.

Covering built design, product design, fashion design, graphic design, craft, arts, food and nightlife, festivals and events, tours, day trips as well as a range of lists, the guide is not only comprehensive but also easy to navigate. Editors Ewan McEoin and Viviane Stappmans, both with backgrounds in design and journalism, have worked with lab.3000 and Studio Round to create something that Melbourne is in need of – actual proof to outsiders that the city is Australia’s creative capital.

Let’s face it, most magazines write about their friends anyway, so treat this not so much as a review but as a congratulations to The Temper Trap for releasing a brilliant new EP. Take it with a pinch of salt if you need to, but either way, just take it.

Their sound is both electric and hypnotising, with vocals that pull heart strings and bass lines that break guitar strings. They know how to sweat and are without a doubt one of the hardest working and most talented bands in Australia, having toured constantly and supporting a wide range of acts from Spank Rock to Damo Suzuki. Although this EP sounds different to those who know their live sound well, it is a well-considered side-step that highlights their cohesion and their song structures while still harnessing the raw energy of their performance.

The Temper Trap will launch their EP at the ThreeThousand Xmas party on Friday December 1 at Miss Libertine, 34 Franklin St, Melbourne. We are honoured to have them, and we will be honoured for our subscribers to attend.

It might come as a surprise to some of the OC generation, but there’s more to Mexico than Spring Break and ‘The Real Cancun’.

Facts:

1. Mexico contains the world’s biggest pyramid (in volume)
2. California used to be within its borders
3. It is the birthplace of chocolate
4. It has a thriving film industry

Looking beyond the well-earned accolades of Amores Perros and Y tu Mama Tambien, the first annual Hola Mexico Film Festival will cover Mexcian film spanning the 1950s until today. Movies such as Solo Dios Sabe (Only God Knows) directed by Carlos Bolado and Duck Season, which was a Cannes contender when released in 2004, prove that Mexican cinema is hotter than fresh tamale.

Six mangos, $5. Bag of oranges, $3.50. 20 punnets of strawberries, $20.

We’re not sure what you’d do with 20 punnets of strawberries, but who cares, you can still buy them for bargain price every week at the Gleadell Street Market.

An early Saturday morning might sound trying after a long Friday night, but just a short spell at Gleadell Street makes for a week’s worth of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, bread, herbs, seafood and flowers – and sure beats a week’s worth of 2 Minute Noodles, for around the same price.

From the seafood van banter to the old men arguing over an artichoke, Gleadell St has all the market trimmings just off Bridge Road. At $2 a bag, how can we not like them apples?

ThreeThousand is a weekly snapshot of Melbourne's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers, photographers, sub-cultural attaches and a large troupe of monkeys who enjoy working for peanuts.

Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it – not because it's paid for.

Advertising Partnerships:
ThreeThousand is funded in full by one advertising partner per issue. We warmly invite advertisers who see the benefit in speaking to Melbourne through a trusted and targeted medium to contact Francesco at frunch@rightanglepublishing.com
