Wednesday 1st – 8th November

There is a lot to be said for outside inspiration. Something or someone to look to when the chips are stacked against you, when you have no more to say, when the keys of your keyboard and your fingertips are like two positive ends of a magnet, always diverting when pushed too close.

This week, in our second guest editor issue, we have turned to The Serps. Attempting to define them would be nearly impossible but what can be said is that they are a non-specific group of artists whose sub-cultural knowledge is lower than a snake’s underbelly. They have published Home Made Tattoos Rule and recently Conor O’Brien’s Westside. This week they have contributed to our STREET, COOL/FOOL, HEAR, READ, WATCH and SHOP sections and have generally done whatever they want including adding one more HEAR for your listening pleasure.

This week, Someday Gallery presents We're only here because I dreamt us up – an international group show curated by Princess Tina founder/designer Beci Orpin. Beci has fetched Canadians Sonja Ahlers and Geneviève Castrée - two talented young artists who have been inspiring her from afar - and has brought them together in Australia to create an exhibition that is girlish but mischievous, innocent but dark, dreamy but grim.

Orpin uses symmetry, silhouettes and colour to create wood-cut works and screen prints with a strong 'folk' feel; Ahlers' craft aesthetic extends from her poetic collage work to her paintings and hand knitted bunnies; and Castrée's highly detailed, introspective drawings comment on the darkness of war and what it is like to be frightened.

The launch will be from 7-9pm on Wednesday November 1 and will feature live musical performances by Woelv (Genevieve Castree) and Calvin Johnson, the founder of K Records.

Conor O'Brien was born in South Africa, raised in Perth, lived in Sydney and Vancouver and now resides in Melbourne. Recent member of The Serpents, he has just released Westside, his third photography book (after Where The Heart Is and Oh No I Think I'm Falling) and his first on Serps Press.

Westside is the fruit of a year living by the beach in Perth, an amazing compilation of landscapes, portraits and observations that has been exhibited (in part) at Monster Children Gallery in October this year, and will go on to show in Melbourne and Perth. This book is a beautiful thing to behold, and at $13, you must have rocks in your head to miss it...

Eddy Current are the finest garage band to come out of Melbourne in years. People have been talking them up pretty seriously in the last six months and it's with good reason. After independently releasing a few seven inch singles, one with Melbourne Hardcore masters Straightjacket Nation, Eddy Current have now released a full album on Dropkick Records.

The official launch for the new album takes place on November 25, but in the meantime, get into the recorded versions, hear it, know it. This is an excellent Melbourne sound.

Mysterious, underground Naz-T-Hop wizards UDL Boyz have been mysteriously pumping earth-shattering tracks out of the southeastern suburbs and creating mystery-coated shockwaves across the country.

There are extremely rare recordings circulating, but until the major labels stop their bickering and come to the party, there's only myspace.com/udlboyz to connect with the real.

Jisoe is a stunning documentary that depicts the trials and tribulations of Melbourne graff writer Jisoe. This powerful film follows Jisoe from the height of his career as a train writer, to his eventual mental breakdown upon getting nicked and losing his girl.

Eddie Martin documents Jisoe, sharing his most intimate thoughts with the camera as he paints hella trains, smokes bongs, rolls graffers for paint and has a seed.

Jisoe is one of the most important independent documentaries to come out of Melbourne - EVER.

Everyone loves concert films:  they’re big and loud and sweaty, and rock stars can usually be counted on to say ridiculous, arrogant things.  Be prepared, though, because Gimme Shelter is as much rockumentary as horror film.

There’s something brutally effective – and manipulative, too – about how the documentary holds back the infamous climatic footage. Caught on camera, a member of the concert’s spontaneous security team, the Hell’s Angels, stabs a man to death just a few rows from where the Rolling Stones are playing.  It’s now often considered the symbolic end of the “Summer of Love.”

Concert films usually try to make you feel like you’re right there, right now, but Gimme Shelter is reflective and somber.  We see the Stones watching back the footage of the day, horrified, as well as smaller moments that puncture the rock star swagger – like Mick Jagger visibly wincing at his embarrassing jokes during a press conference. With the film’s re-release, almost 40 years later, it remains as powerful as ever, having only collected more symbolic weight along the way.

*Sam Cutler will also appear at the Spanish Club for the launch of Black Cab's Jesus East record on Sat Nov 4. Tickets online.

ThreeThousand is a weekly snapshot of Melbourne's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers, photographers, sub-cultural attaches and a large troupe of monkeys who enjoy working for peanuts.

Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it – not because it's paid for.

Advertising Partnerships:
ThreeThousand is funded in full by one advertising partner per issue. We warmly invite advertisers who see the benefit in speaking to Melbourne through a trusted and targeted medium to contact Francesco at frunch@rightanglepublishing.com
