Wednesday 21st – 28th June

The Danny DeVito of days, the Winter Solstice is upon us. And although shorter, this week in Melbourne is definitely sweeter than most. ThreeThousand Issue 060 features Kostas Seremetis’s exhibition ‘F.F.F’ at Someday Gallery, Jaakan’s Winter Blues Collection, some family photos and Richmond boutique meet me at mike’s.

To help you make the most of the longer nights we feature the Cutters release of Kim Moyes’ (The Presets) System Breakdown 12” and review the smouldering new film Factotum. We also look interstate at the ever-inspiring creative conference Semi-Permanent and look locally at the week’s five best gigs according to us.

Melbourne may not be hailed as ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ but we sure as hell can try.

Children around the world would probably cry if Mickey Mouse ever used a one finger salute, but at the hands of New York artist Kostas Seremetis the sweet rodent not only lifts his middle finger but throws in an ‘f’ word for good measure.

Renown for his abstract pop-art interpretations recalling battles of good vs evil, Kostas’s first Australian exhibition ‘F.F.F’ definitely leans towards the latter. Bleaker than Sin City and blacker than noir, the manipulated photographs, large-scale paintings and comic-inspired prints speak of villains, crime and power.

From disturbing Abu Ghraib-remnant photos to the bloody glow of the apocalyptic ‘Detonator’ series, the entire space (Mickey included) becomes emblematic of the corrupting forces of power.

No matter how hard you try, sometimes it can be difficult to carve your own identity in the fashion hyper bowl. However, local label Jaakan refuse to be beaten down by stripy scarves or fluoro skinny jeans. Instead, designers Mary Zaf and Pippa Joseph inject their own personality through a collection of vintage fabrics sourced from all over the globe.

For winter the duo have paired boleros and flirty balloon skirts over opaque tights, while their range of frocks like little Lorna (pictured) are a breath of fresh air in a city that can sometimes seem clouded with stagnant fashion faux pars.

Amidst the factory outlet stores and bargain basements along Bridge Rd, there sits a small beacon, a diamond in a rough of cheap fakes - a sweet pearl in the oyster of Melbourne’s sample shopping district.

Behind a window of over 100 hand-made hearts, meet me at mike’s is a loving shrine to times gone by. The enclave stocks pre-1989 to 1920s vintage clothing and accessories, Little Golden Books, second hand pieces from quality labels like Gorman and Marc Jacobs plus its very own vintage tees. With prices that don’t surge far above its neighbours, the 1.3-year-old store seems more Sydney Rd than Bridge, and is a refreshing for exactly that reason.

There are few things more torturous than posing for a family photo or being forced to trawl through a collection of them. However, Sophie Spencer Wood encourages us to lie back (and flash back) in a post-Freudian family retrospective that is far more fascinating than it is mind numbing.

Family: Photographers Photograph Their Families is a collection of almost 200 photographs by a wide range of photographers that consciously reflect on the emotions and experiences wrought and woven into the family unit. It considers the autobiographical nature of family photographs and why the hell any of us keep them. For those that want to remember why they are who they are, Family reveals a vision of our most personal and intimate ties.

Okay, okay. This record may not be brand new but it still has its shine. In February, when this 12” was released, ThreeThousand unfortunately had its fingers in too many pies to keep one on the pulse. But with the upcoming Cutters party this weekend we thought we would give it some love because god (and the devil) know it’s worth it.

One half of The Presets, drummer/ producer/ raver/ programmer Kim Moyes has created two tracks, ‘Wet’N’Wild’ and ‘System Breakdown’, which have received props from UK stores such as Rough Trade, Phonica and Piccadilly and have been championed by the likes of DJs Justice and Erol Alkan. Stripped back to reveal the core components of good dance music Kim proves that less is more and that minimalism can be used to maximise your party experience.

Kim plays the Cutters party this Saturday June 24 at The Order of Melbourne.

Feeling more like a book than a film, Factotum, like a stolen cigarette, should be savoured and smoked slowly. Based upon a novel by Charles Bukowski the film stars Matt Dillon as the alcoholic, lover, smoker, gambler, factory worker and writer Henry Chinaski. In true Beatnik style, Chinaski attempts to make his life a poem. Far from the beret and trench-coat wearing poets of university ‘spoken-word’ nights, Dillon’s character wears his masculinity like bourbon mixed with stale cologne, a flawed romantic with an intriguing mixture of intelligence and instinct.

Factotum is a film that will make you want to carry your worldly possessions around in one bag, to disregard convention and to embrace self-destructive behaviour in the knowledge that sometimes, even at your lowest points, your highest thoughts can come.

Melburnians may have to put up with a temperamental weather woman, but for all her fickle attributes, she’s at least taught us to do winter in style. Local label Jaakan is cute, kooky and will keep you looking hot even when it’s hailing out. We have a Betty Bolero, maroon size 8 to give away, just answer the following question.

This weeks question:
Which one of the following was a Blues Brother?

a) John Belushi
b) John Howard
c) John Safran
d) John McEnroe

ThreeThousand is a weekly snapshot of Melbourne's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers, photographers, sub-cultural attaches and a large troupe of monkeys who enjoy working for peanuts.

Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it – not because it's paid for.

Advertising Partnerships:
ThreeThousand is funded in full by one advertising partner per issue. We warmly invite advertisers who see the benefit in speaking to Melbourne through a trusted and targeted medium to contact Francesco at frunch@rightanglepublishing.com

Editorial Submissions:
The editorial team at ThreeThousand may know a lot - but they don't know everything. Feel free to send information on events, venues or anything else to chris@threethousand.com.au

Feedback:
Heap praise, sling abuse, ramble inanely – if you have anything to say to us please send it directly to talk@threethousand.com.au
