Wednesday 20th – 27th December

It’s that time of year when vowels are on valium and consonants are on crack, there is lots of talk but it’s hard to find the meaning. ‘Christmas Spam’ is everywhere so we’re going to keep this shorter than shortbread and just as tasty.

ThreeThousand Issue 086 wishes you Merry Christmas and stuffs your stocking with Cornelius’ Sensuous, Donny Miller's Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings, the Topshop online store, KenzoAmour and we also say “Bah Humbug” to Sophia Floppola’s Marie Antoinette.

And lastly, thank you to everyone who has helped, read and recommended things this year. Because of you every day in Melbourne is like Christmas to us. No, really.

ThreeThousand Issue 086 – so this is Christmas

PS: ThreeThousand will return from the Bahamas on January 10

If you walk down Bourke St Mall at this time of year, you could be forgiven for thinking that Christmas is ultimately a time for shopping. For buying a whole lot of stuff that no one really wants, and that they will return on December 26. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that Christmas is also a time for friends, for catching up with the people who have supported you during the year and giving them something they really appreciate – like a drink.

Curious Eidolon’s Very Butchered Christmas Show brings together various artists who have been involved in-store throughout the year. Precious Pirate, Made By White, The Encouragement Award, Tristan Jalleh and Poke Clothing will curate their own store sections, with one-off accessories, toys and clothes. So be you a friend, or a friend of a friend, come down for a browse, drink and Christmas cheer minus the cha-ching.

Instead of getting caught up in the peppered language of perfume – sensuous…cradled slumber…caressing skin…you get the drift - we prefer to focus on why KenzoAmour is a scent to remember, in a good way.

1. It doesn’t smell like a grannies’ bathroom or car air freshener
2. The bottle is designed by Karim Rashid, whose CV includes Alessi, Caroline Herrera, Bonaldo and Feek
3. This Christmas, $10 from the sale of every bottle goes to Plan Australia, to support its early learning and development programs for underprivileged children in India
4. In conjunction with Plan, Kenzo are also sponsoring a $6,800 trip to Rajasthan, India. Click here to enter

Well breathe easy, no longer must you fly 16 hours, or get lost in a four level store on Oxford St.Topshop deliver for 10 pounds. That’s it. Merry Christmas.

Cynicism, when perfectly executed, can become strangely positive. Imbued with both honesty and relevance, this sort of cynicism is more about statement than about persuasion - and you can take it or leave it - but in the case of Donny Miller's Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings we recommend you take it.

Each page is like a colourful fortune cookie for the new age. Phrases like “I was so horny I masturbated thinking of my own girlfriend” and “Expectation is disappointment in disguise” are matched against iconic imagery that is both humourous and naively haunting.

Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings is the perfect coffee table book to show your friends. Sit back and watch their reactions to each page and you might just find out what they’ve been thinking but have never been able to say.

Some artists and their releases are easy to write about but Cornelius, and his latest release Sensuous, is not one of them. With so many things taking place both simultaneously and separately, the sounds contained within this album are innovative to the purist and mysterious to the novice. Experimental elements surround pop structures like seagulls surround a chip, biting through it while squawking occasionally to get attention.

Sensuous is a soundtrack of sorts, one perhaps most fitting to a Cornelius dream, a glitchy fantasy where, not unlike his live show, influences and colours can melt and listeners can be transported. Transported where? That’s up to you.

Oh Sophia... I feel like we have broken up. And it has got nothing to do with that guy from Phoenix either. You sucked me in with your soft cinematic touch – the subtle melancholy of The Virgin Suicides and the high-rise romance of Lost in Translation. I was yours. Totally. And then this? When I strip away a hundred different beautiful shoes, the odd well-lit shot and a good soundtrack I am left with nothing but longing. No emotional engagement, no real sense of tragedy or whiff of historical enlightenment… nothing. And so it’s over for us.

Unlike our northern Australian counterparts we don’t have inner-city beaches nice enough or weather consistent enough to justify every house having a pool.

That said, nor do we have Cronulla-esque race riots, particularly not at the wonderfully multi-cultural North Fitzroy Pool, which was voted Metropolitan Facility of the Year 2006.

The summer hipster hangout of choice, the ‘Aqua Profonda’ is the best place to escape an inner-city heat wave while the decking is often more about socialising than swimming - just without the petting.

ThreeThousand is a weekly snapshot of Melbourne's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers, photographers, sub-cultural attaches and a large troupe of monkeys who enjoy working for peanuts.

Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it – not because it's paid for.

Advertising Partnerships:
ThreeThousand is funded in full by one advertising partner per issue. We warmly invite advertisers who see the benefit in speaking to Melbourne through a trusted and targeted medium to contact Francesco at frunch@rightanglepublishing.com
