Wednesday 12th – 19th October

There is a cluster of girls wearing muffin-tops on Swanston Street . Maybe they've had a few UDLs? Or maybe they just want to be heard? Whatever the case is they are speaking so loud and their vocabulary is bad like, whatever. Hopefully it will be a busy night at Icon Bar - plenty of 2 for 1 drinks and cheap B52's all night.

A few streets away, a couple sit down at The Waiters Restaurant. He's just bought the new Sigur Ros which he claims is so good that he had an out of body experience listening to it at Metropolis. She can't stop talking about The Proposition, and it scares him because girls who like Nick Cave so much are usually heavy-duty maintenance. Nonetheless, he likes her and expects nothing melancholic at The Presets gig.

We live in a several city and have the luxury of so many choices each day. ThreeThousand is here to help you make those choices. And if you make a bad one never mind, because you can always drown your sorrow with a layback tequila shot at Icon.

ThreeThousand - love it, use it, spread it.

Affordable is to art what Andrew G is to fashion. By all accounts it should work, but it clearly doesn't. Well, we're here to deliver you some good news. You can now make a unique piece of art yourself without marrying someone in the Smorgan family. Unfortunately though, there's no helping Andrew G.

Jones Canvas Art has a limited edition range of art you can be proud to hang (they come ready to hang by the way). Commissions are also available - in fact if you were charitable you'd get an Andrew G print and make him fashionable for the first and only time ever.

Remember when street wear was infused with fun and wit? Back in the days when you didn't need a smug grin to pull off a printed t-shirt? Well it looks like those days are here again. Designer/illustrator Dana Lenko is the genius behind LENKO, a label you can smile about.

Her first store has just opened in the newly refurbished Melbourne Central and plays home to lots of crazy characters. Find them on T's, hoodies, tanks and jumpers (for bys and girls). And to prove her skills go far beyond screen printing, you'll also find a slick range of jackets, shorts and skirts to fatten up your wardrobe.

Regrettably there is supposed to be a cute little dash kind of thing on top of the 'o' in Sigur Ros. We can't find it on the keyboard, but to describe it quickly; it's the sort of dash that sits on an unusual angle and kind of tips its hat to the letter before it (in this case the R of Ros). There's a real Icelandic cool about this dash - as there is about their album Takk. A musically euphoric journey that is almost fjord-like in its swells of strings, rapids of drums and lazy calms of chords.

At this point, anyone who knows a good CD review will tell you that this is giving sweet FA by which to actually assess the album. In our defence we say that Sigur Ros have created something so beautifully strange that it can't quite be described, and so you should visit their site and at least sample the album. What we can tell you is that you may feel like laughing and crying at the same time and if you have taste, Takk will wind its way into your collection.

Takk.

Expectation leads to disappointment, not an overly positive mantra, and not one to live your life by, yet, one that rings true of The Proposition, the new film directed by John Hillcoat and written by Nick Cave. The Proposition is not bad, it is just not great and pales in comparison to Nick Cave's other talents. An Australian 'Western' set in the 1880s it dabbles in this nation's history like a Dunlop Volley in a puddle and although there are moments of brilliance, there are just a few too many sunsets and token characters to make it truly great. Who knows what got lost in translation from the page to the screen, from creation to production and Nick Cave does say that this film ' is a heart with many chambers'. It is just a shame that a few of its aorta's are blocked by pork chops.

The Proposition

What do gunfire sieges and ravioli have in common? On the Sopranos all that's missing is a stiff drink served by a big-haired broad in a tight dress. But in the dark lanes of Melbourne 's CBD, the two have also found their match at the Waiters Restaurant where in 1978, 29 diners were held hostage by a gunman, threatening to release them via the 1 st floor restaurant's window limb by limb. After 4 hours of patron's fetuccini, pastrami and canneloni going cold to the rants of the pacing madman, the pasta-loving prisoners were finally released when cops brought in the big guns to talk sense into to guy - his mama.

And to this day, mama still knows best as diners gorge on belly-ache sized servings of Italian home cooking in an ambient interior of laminex tables (and walls), faded bamboo print curtains and sticky school carpet. What it lacks in aesthetics, it provides in heartiness with staples; Spaghetti Bolognese and Steaks with veg. Cheese lovers and vegetarians will cry joyful tears for the Spinach Crepes rolling up a gooey filling of wilted spinach, ricotta and gorgonzola all smothered in Napoli sauce and yet more cheese.

Although prices which don't appear on the menu remain a mystery throughout the meal, expect to be presently surprised by the bill and order entree servings if you don't want to upset mama when you can't finish your meal.

A collectors item doesn't just refer to a Franklin Mint plate you see some old bat throw around on Antique Roadshow. Sometimes, things worth collecting are also things you actually want. With that in mind we're giving you a chance to WIN a copy of Designation; the first consolidated showcase of Australian design of its kind - certainly something to treasure. To WIN it all you have to do is answer one simple question.

This weeks question:
The square root of 2005 is roughly...

a) 47
b) 43
c) Tom Cruise
d) 45

Send an email with the correct answer to win@threethousand.com.au to win.

ThreeThousand is a weekly snapshot of Melbourne 's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers, photographers, sub-cultural attaches and a large troupe of monkeys who enjoy working for peanuts.

Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.

Advertising Partnerships:
ThreeThousand is funded in full by one advertising partner per issue. We warmly invite advertisers who see the benefit in speaking to Melbourne through a trusted and targeted medium to contact us at info@threethousand.com.au
