Wednesday 7th – 14th December

Melbourne is like a Rubik’s Cube. Gridlike, colourful, complex and infinitely frustrating if you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. You can spend hours twisting and turning as the colours and squares seem to get further away from where they should be.

Before you have a mental breakdown remember that a city, like the Rubik’s Cube requires patience and a bit of good old fashioned cheating. ThreeThousand is here to help you peel off the stickers from the puzzle and put them back where you want. With shops, galleries, books, music, mayhem and a bit of xmas good will as well, ThreeThousand puts things in Melbourne together so you can go to your friends and say ‘Look! I solved it…it was easy.’

Melbourne’s mX newspaper is more popular than gouging out your eyes with a fork. However, if they handed out free forks at train stations we are sure that a more people would change their preference.

Ash Keating, who has a background in street art, activism, waste management and fine art, poignantly uses mX newspapers as the medium for his current exhibition at Diane Tanzer Gallery. His show Press Release asks us to consider the mX outside the confines of a peak hour train ride. Of concern to the artist is the environmental consequence of thousands of newspapers being dumped at train stations each day, as well as the way in which the city and its events are presented in the media.  In many ways Press Release is everything that the mX is not; meticulous, considered, conscientious, unique, intelligent and informative.

Inspired by pop-culture, World Domination is the new board game for modern society. Combining trivia, travel and money World Domination proves what we have known all along – the fact that Monopoly is dead boring and preferable only to a game of Russian Roulette.

Chris Couch, owner of Polyester Record Store and Candle Records, conceived World Domination seventeen years ago and travel writer and Sydney Morning Herald music critic Bruce Elder wrote the 2820 questions for the game. Together they have created something that is perfectly timed for Christmas 2005 – a gift that will not only make your friends happy but also allow you to stitch them at the same time.

ThreeThousand is a weekly snapshot of Melbourne 's subculture, fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers, photographers, sub-cultural attaches and a large troupe of monkeys who enjoy working for peanuts.

Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.

Advertising Partnerships:
ThreeThousand is funded in full by one advertising partner per issue. We warmly invite advertisers who see the benefit in speaking to Melbourne through a trusted and targeted medium to contact us at info@threethousand.com.au

Editorial Submissions:
The editorial team at ThreeThousand may know a lot - but they don't know everything. Feel free to send information on events, venues or anything else to editorial@threethousand.com.au

Feedback:
Heap praise, sling abuse, ramble inanely - if you have anything to say to us please send it directly to talk@threethousand.com.au
